WHAT HAPPENS IN A GENUINE HOLY GHOST REVIVAL One Raphael Oye Taiwo Conviction of sin and genuine repentance Acts 2:36-38, 41 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Conviction of sin and heart-felt repentance characterize genuine Holy Ghost revivals. This is to be expected since light reveals objects that have been concealed in darkness. In the immediate presence of God the least ugly thing in man is made manifest by the light of His glory and holiness. When Isaiah found himself in the presence of God, the prophet he cried out in anguish, “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 6:5. Sins that the prophet had been unaware of in himself was immediately made manifest to him by the light of God’s presence. R.A. Torrey says, “If you see something men call revival, which has no conviction of sin, you may know at once that it is bogus. Conviction is a sure mark.” As the result of a divine revelation, Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1494) began to preach in Florence, Italy, with a new unction and power from above. His congregations were often in tears, so that the whole church resounded with their sobs and weeping. Men and women of every age and class would burst into passionate tears as the Holy Spirit convicted them of their sins. People were so eager to hear Girolamo Savonarola that they arose in the middle of the night and waited for hours for the cathedral doors to open. The moment the doors were opened the people packed the Church. People came along the streets, singing and rejoicing. They listened to Savonarola?s sermons with rapt attention. So engrossed in his sermons were they that they forgot the time. They thought the sermons had scarcely begun when they were in fact finished. The more they heard the more they wanted to hear. They abandoned their vile and worldly books, All prayed and went to Church. The rich gave freely to the poor. Restitutions were made, like merchants restoring ill-gotten gains amounting to many florins. Unchaste people stopped singing ribald songs, and sang hymns instead. Carnivals and vanities were forsaken by all the people who had indulged in them. On July 23, 1839, William C. Burns preached to a great crowd of people. As he narrated the story of the revival at Kirk of Shotts, the Spirit of God came mightily upon the people. Conviction of sin gripped the people. They broke forth, simultaneously, in weeping and wailing, tears and groans. Some were screaming out in agony. Others fell to the ground as if they had been dead. Among them were strong men. David Brainerd, another revivalist, gave the following report about a revival meeting: ‘The power of God seed to descend upon the assembly like a mighty, rushing wind, and with an astonishing energy bore down all before it…. The most stubborn hearts were now obliged to bow. A principal man among Indians… who with a great degree of confidence the day before told me he had been a Christian more that ten years, who had been a murderer, a conjurer, and a notorious drunkard, was likewise brought now to cry for mercy with tears…’ In February, 1944, a revivalist, Mr. N. Daniel, went to Repalle at the invitation of the Lutherans Mission to hold revival meetings for their teachers, workers and church members. |
