CHRISTIAN’S PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Raphael Oye Taiwo Believers in Jesus are God’s children (John 1:12; 1 John 3:1). Not only are they God’s children, they are also God’s servants and ambassadors on earth (2 Cor. 5:20). With them, God desires a close and deep relationship (Exo. 6:7, Jer. 13:11). You may be wondering why the God of heaven and earth desires from His people close relationship with Him. Why must a Christian seek a deep personal relationship with his God? God enjoys His people’s relationship with Him (1 John 1:3). In Genesis 5:22-24, we read about Enoch’s walk-relationship with God. God is so pleased with this relationship that he took Enoch alive from the earth to be with him. In Matthew 3:16-17, God is so pleased with the relationship of the man Jesus with him that He spoke of it at the place where Jesus was baptized - for all to hear. God rewards our relationship with Him Gen. 22:16-17; Psalm 1:1-3. God rewards those who maintain deep and close relationship with Him by fighting for them, defending them and exalting them (Num.12:1-10; Num. 16:1-3, 32) Close and deep personal relationship can be had with God through prayer – Luke 6:12. Jesus’regular fellowship with the Father through prayer was the major reason Jesus could be so close to God the Father when He was on earth. The greatest reason why the Bible encourages us to pray always is to enable us to enjoy deep fellowship and close relationship with the Father (1 Thess. 5:17; 1 Tim. 5:5) Close and deep personal relationship can be had with God by walking in faith – Heb.11:6. Abraham enjoyed a deep, close relationship with God through faith (Gal. 3:6, 9). He demonstrtated his great faith in God by not wavering at the promise of God through unbelief. ‘He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God’ Rom. 4:20. No wonder God declared him His friend (Isa 41:8; James 2:23). Faith pleases God and without it we cannot please God (Heb 11:6). It was because of this that Jesus never fail to rebuke small faith and praise strong faith. He knew very well that without real faith in God, it would be impossible to enjoy a deep relationship with the Father (Mark 4:40; Mat. 8:26; Mat. 14:3; Mat 8:10; Mat. 9:20-22; Mat. 15:28). Close and deep personal relationship can be had with God by walking in the Spirit – Gal 5:16-18. Those who fail to walk in the Spirit cannot but walk in the flesh, and those who walk in the flesh cannot but displease God. The activities of the flesh (the sinful nature of man) are in direct opposition to the operation of the Spirit. Walking in the flesh prevents deep and close relationship with God (1 Cor. 2:14; Rom. 8: 5-8; James 4:4). Hindrances to deep and close relationship with God Now, let us examine the things that hinder Christians from developing a proper close relationship with God. Wordliness 1 John 2:15-17 The heart of a child of God is not big enough to contain the love of the world and the love of God together. One will have to give up that narrow place for either the love of God or the love of the world. Christians who allow the love of the world in their heart are like boat that allows the sea to get into it. It won’t stay afloat for long. Covetousness, greed, avarice Balaam was a prophet of God whose great divine power even king Balak recognized and acknowledged (Num. 22:4-6; Num.24:15-16). Because of his desire for material gain, he acted against the will of God and was rejected by the Spirit of God. He perished with the unrighteousness (Num. 31:8; Josh, 13:22). That is why the Lord warns solemnly, “Beware of covetousness” Luke 12:15. To enjoy deep relationship with God, you must never go the way of Balaam, whose name become synonymous with God’s covetousness and ungodly ambition in the name of God. Disobedience King Saul was chosen by God among all the Israelite (1 Sam. 9:15-17). He was one in million. Because of God’s goodness to him, he was filled with Spirit of God (1Sam.10:9-11). But he lost this wonderful relationship with God because of disobedience and rebellion against Words of God (1Sam.15:22-23; 1 Sam.16:23). To enjoy special relationship with God, disobedience is one thing you must avoid like the plague. |
