LOVE Part Six
Good works without love are nothing Verse 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. God knows we can put up a great show of loving, when we don’t really love, just to get people to praise us, form a high opinion of us, or reward us in some ways. Many are they who give alms to the poor, not because they love the poor, but because they are: Trying to work their ways to heaven, like the Muslims who give alms to fulfill one of the pillars of Islam but will think nothing of destroying their fellow human beings and their properties - in the name of their religion. Trying to get God to bless them in return, like those who flung money at beggars whose damaged hands they loath to look at. Trying to prove that they really care for the needy, like leaders of developing countries who will donate large-sum of money to victims of natural disasters in other countries while their own people suffer daily because the leaders have siphoned their money into their private accounts overseas. Desirous of people’s praises for their ‘generosity’ and ‘philanthropic spirit,’ like the Jews who would get trumpeters to blow trumpets before them when they were going to give alms (Matthew 6:1-2). Philippians 2:3 warns, Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. God shows us what real love is through His Son: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends John 15:13. This is a love that is not motivated by selfishness, empty conceit or petty ambition. It is the God kind of love. Our doing good to others will do none to us, if it is not done out of genuine love to God and man. The most commendable philanthropic deeds and the most laudable humanitarian works will be of no avail to us if they are not motivated by genuine love. It will not profit us if we give away all we have, while we harbor hatred in our heart against any of the other children of God or speak evil of any of our brethren.
