LOVE Part Three
WHAT THE PEOPLE OF GOD SHOULD DO CONCERNING LOVE Put on love Col. 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. Real love, like decent clothes, must be worn to cover our soul and spirit. The person who has put on love acts automatically in a way that God desires. His act of love is not a put-on (a pretended act or show). He doesn’t have to struggle or compel himself to love. Loving is as natural to him as eating. Pursue love 1 Cor. 14:1 (NKJV) Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. A child of God must desire and seek opportunities to demonstrate Christian love, not only to fellow believers, but also to the people of the world who are not born again. Abound in love Phil.1:9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment 1 Thes. 3:12 Christians must see to it that their love keep growing every time (1 Thes. 4:10). It should be like a river that becomes bigger and bigger the further it goes, as it is continually fed with rain, streams and smaller rivers. Let brotherly love continue Heb. 13:1 Let brotherly love continue. Rom 12:10; 1Thes 4:9; 1Peter 1:22; 1Peter 2:17; 1Peter 3:8 Christians must keep on loving one another, as Jesus keeps on loving them. Love is not a one-day affair. It is not a task that you stop doing when you have accomplished it. Love is a perpetual activity (1 Cor. 13:8). Along the way, there will be people and things that will try to discourage you from keeping on following the way of love - ingrates, ingratitude and thankless tasks. Here is a question we cannot ignore, though teachers of Bible love would like to dodge it. (I, for one would like to). “How can the Bible-kind of love be practiced in the modern days when it seems not to pay to do so and when frightening increase in ungodliness makes it virtually impossible to practice?” Admittedly, one can get into various kinds of trouble for practicing love in our days world. Soft, weak, dim-witted, unrealistic. These are some of the adjectives the world uses to qualify those who chose to obey the injunction of the Bible about love. But fellows, we must choose to obey the word of God whatever the cost. As we seek to do God’s will in a dangerous world, the Spirit of God will help and protect us from all evil (Psalm 121:7). It is the duty of the blessed Spirit to help us do the will of God, and to see that we don’t get burnt for doing it. God wants brotherly love to continue in spite of everything. He wants all we do to be done in love - 1 Cor.16:14. Everything that we do should be motivated by love - not by self-interest, malice, envy, ill-feeling and bitterness.
