Why does the Lord command us to love? Why does He impress it upon us the fact of the commandment to love being imperative and paramount? Why does the Bible drum the message of love into the people of God?

We must love because Jesus commands us to Love

John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

John 15:12, 17; 1 John 3:23; 1 John 4:21.

To fail to love our fellow human beings is to fail to obey one of God’s greatest commandments (Mat. 22:36-40; Mark 12:31).

We must love because God loves us

1John 4:11

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

John 15:12-13; Mat 18:33; 1John 3:16

The Love of God is both an example and mandate from Him for us to love our fellow human beings. The thought of the unconditional love of God for us should motivate, even compel, us to love our fellows. 

We must love because our knowledge of God depends on love

1 John 4:8, 12, 20

8. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

12. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

20. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

Anybody who does not love his fellow human beings is proving that he does not really know God because God is love. Such a person is a self-deceiver if he thinks he really knows God – Love personified. Nobody can claim a true and deep knowledge of God without love.

Love is one of the fruit of the Spirit

Gal. 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

A fruitful Christian will walk in love. A Christian whose actions and life are not motivated and guided by love does not bear fruit.
