LOVE

Part One

SUPREMACY AND IMPORTANCE OF LOVE

                                          Raphael Oye Taiwo

Love for fellow human beings is the second greatest commandment

It is one of the two greatest law - second only to love for God.

Matthew 22

36. Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37.Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38. This is the first and great commandment.

39. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Lev. 19:18; Mat 19:19; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27; Rom. 13:9; Gal. 5:14

The greatest of God’s commandment is love towards God. If you don’t have a genuine love for God, you can’t have a genuine love for your fellow human beings. If you don’t love God, the love you show to your friends and neighbors is pretended or shallow.

The fact is, real love for man can only emanate from a heart filled with real love for God.

Love is the bond which binds all virtues together in perfect unity

Mat 22:40

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All other commandments hinge on the commandment of love. The commandment of love is the chain that holds the other commandments together. Without it all the other commandments fall to pieces.

‘On these two-hang all the law and the prophets. They are like the first and last links of a chain, all the intermediate ones depend on them.  True religion begins and ends in love to God and man.  These are the two grand links that unite God to man, man to his fellows, and men again to God.’ (Adam Clarke’s Commentary - on Matthew 22:40)

Love is the end of all commandments

Every moral law of God in the Bible has love as its aim and objective.

1 Tim.1:5

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

Romans 13:8-10; Gal. 5:14; James 2:8.

Let’s take the Ten Commandments as an example. The first four concerns our love for God. If I really love God, why should I want to serve any other god? If I accept God as my Creator and Master in real love, why should I want to offend or displease Him by taking His Name in vain?

The second six concerns our love for our fellow human beings. If you love your parents, you will naturally desire to honor them. If you love your neighbors, you won’t have the urge to steal what belong to them, knowing what pain the loss of the stolen things will cause them.

If a man loves his wife, the desire to sleep with another woman will not be there. A man who takes his friend’s wife to bed proves his lack of love to that friend. You don’t desire to kill somebody you love but you do everything in your power to save him from death.

Love is the perfect satisfaction of the law. To perfectly satisfy the law, we must practice loving others.

Love is greater than faith and hope

1 Cor. 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Faith is very important and necessary (Heb.11:6; Mat. 21:21). Hope is important and necessary (Rom. 8:24; Rom.15:13). Love, nevertheless, surpasses them in importance.

Faith, for example, works only by love – Gal, 5:6. Where love is lacking, faith will lose its effectiveness and power fast.

Love is greater than the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Without love, all spiritual gifts, all talents and abilities are worthless. Good works without love are useless - 1 Cor. 13:3.

Love will never cease

1Cor. 13:8

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away..

Prophecies, tongues, gift of word of knowledge and other spiritual gifts are all good and necessary in the church today. But they are only useful in this world, not in heaven. Our preternatural proximity with God in heaven, the perfection of heaven and the availability of everything perfect in heaven will make unnecessary spiritual gifts there.

Love is the hall-mark of heaven.
