Lesson Two

                                    Few are chosen

Only two out of a million. Num. 14:30-35; Heb 3:16-19. With great excitement at the dawn of a bright new life, these Jews followed Moses out of Egypt. With great hope for a glorious future in the land flowing with milk and honey, they marched towards the Promised Land after Pharaoh had been forced by the superior power of God to allow them to go. But only Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun, out of the great number of adult Jews, were approved of God to enter the Promised Land. The others perished in the desert under the heavy hand of God.

Only 300 out of 32,000. Judg 7:1-8. Thirty-two thousand men gathered together to fight the Lord’s battle against the Midianites, the enemies of God’s people. But God had decided that only a chosen few of them would be honored to fight the Lord’s battle. He chose only three hundred men to use to fight and defeat the Midianites.

Many not approved. John 2:23-24, ‘Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men.’  Why would Jesus not entrust Himself to these men who said they believed in Him?

He did not approve of them. How many believers in the Lord today are approved of God? Many are called, but few are chosen, approved of God. Every Christian should now say sincerely to himself, “Time for self deceit is over” and then seriously ask himself or herself, “Am I chosen? Am I approved of God?” 2 Cor. 13:5, ‘Examine yourselves…prove your own selves.’  There are, however, a group of believers to whom Jesus entrusted Himself. He moved around with them. He confided in them and let them into the secrets of heaven (Matt 13:10-11).
