BEWARE OF PRIDE

Raphael Oye Taiwo

Men used of God should be careful not to allow the devil to get a place in their lives and ministries through pride. They should not yield to the devil’s persuasion that they are some special people, mini-gods who are better that others.

Brother John belonged to the Revival Team of Laymen’s Evangelical Fellowship of Madras, India. He was mightily anointed and used of God. The healing of the sick and the casting out of demons were a normal and frequent occurrence in his Ministry. Even the dead were raised to life through his prayer.

But the devil got a chance to almost ruin Bro John’s ministry through pride. Brother John had been invited to the home of a well-to-do Hindu who was bed-ridden. This man of God prayed for the sick man on the point of death.

The sick man was instantly healed.

When the man rose up, he bowed low to Brother John.

Brother John felt highly pleased and gratified. He was a poor man with practically no education. And the man worshipping him was a venerated man whose caste-pride forbad his meeting with the minister on equal terms under normal conditions. The

Holy Spirit was grieved. For a season, Brother John was stripped of his power to heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons.

But the Lord is very gracious. When Brother John repented and asked the Lord for forgiveness, the good Lord gave the power to him.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

 Proverbs 18:12

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

Proverbs 29:23

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

Isaiah 28:3

The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:

This is a warning to us ministers of God. However great what God is doing to us we must not become proud. We must allow God to have all the glory for what He is doing in and through us.

It is easy to put on humility one doesn’t have.

“Oh, don’t worry brother; give all the glory to God.”

But the heart may like the glory and enjoy the praise one is pretending to pass on to God. One may even feel that one deserves the praise. This feeling may cause one to feel hurt if the praise does not come.

We must never forget that though men praise us for our humility, the pride in our heart cannot escape God.

Jer. 17:10

I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

1Sam. 2:3

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
