Just listen to some of the pieces of news I read in just two successive days (and these were not the most terrible of the news of those two days.):

In Pittsburgh, a gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call on Saturday, killing three of them and turning a quiet Pittsburgh street into a battlefield… Associated Press, April 5, 2009.

A suicide bomber set off his explosives on Sunday at the entrance to a crowded Shiite mosque in Chakwal city in Punjab province, Pakistan, killing 22 people and wounding dozens more, officials said. Associated Press, April 5, 2009.

In Berlin, a gunman killed two people, probably including himself, and critically wounded two others in a court house in the Southern German town of Landshut...

A Texas man has been arrested for allegedly raping 19 women across the border in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, authorities said Monday. Associated Press, Tue Apr 7, 2009.

207 people died in the powerful quake that devastated part of central Italy…15 people remain missing… 1,000 people are injured. Associated Press, April 7, 2009.

Well, what if the news is bad? Should we children of God allow ourselves to be held in the grip of monster fear? Should we allow our hearts to quake with fear? Should we give in to despair, anxiety, and discouragement?

No. The Lord has warned concerning the end-time situations we are witnessing today: Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth… Luke 21:26. In spite of all the bad news, we people of God can, and should live our life free of fear, worry and anxiety.

The people of God should not fear because God is with them. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isa. 41:10

God’s presence and proximity are the greatest reasons why the people of God should not fear. If the omnipotent God is with us, and is closer to us than any friend can ever be, we have no cause to fear. Jesus says, Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:1.

According to Isaiah 25:4 God is a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

So, let’s learn to abide in Him and not fear.
