THE HOLY SPIRIT

Raphael Oye Taiwo

(Part One)

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit  of God the Father

Mat 10:20

For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

Isa 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound

1Co 2:11

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

Being the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit is God.

Act 5:3-4

3.  But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4.  Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

The Apostle Peter told Ananias that he lied to the Holy Spirit,  an action that meant the same thing as lying to God.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ

Rom 8:9

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

In this scripture, the Holy Spirit is referred to as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. Though the Holy Spirit is a Person – not a human person, but a personal spiritual Being – He is equal in nature with the Father and the Son.

1Pe 1:11

Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

Gal 4:6

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Being the Spirit of  God the Son, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is equal to Him.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Power

Isa 11:2

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD

‘The spirit of … might’. The word ‘might’ means ‘power’. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of power. He empowered Jesus when the Messiah was on earth as a human being

Luke 4:14, 18

14.  And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

18.  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised

Mat 12:27-28

27.  And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

28.  But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

What Jesus is trying to make clear here is that He performed all those great  miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit and not by the power of the devil, like His critics were suggesting.

Though He was the Son of God, the Man Jesus had to be empowered by the Holy Spirit - just like His human friends would have to be - having stripped Himself of the glory and power of heaven before He came into the world.

The Holy Spirit empowered the early Christians to do the work of God and continue the miracle ministry of Jesus Christ on earth.

Act 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Rom 15:19

Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

The Holy Spirit empowers God's people today, making it possible for the promises for the promises of Jesus in Mark 16:17-18; Luke 10:19 and Acts 1:8 to come into reality in the believers' lives.

The Holy Spirit is a Living power, not a blind power like electricity, storm, lightning and bull-dozer.

The Holy Spirit  is the Spirit of Revelation

Eph 1:17

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

 Joh 16:13

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Holy Spirit reveals things to God's people that they could not otherwise know. He manifests His revelational power through various means – inspired thoughts in human minds, ‘inward’ revelation, still small voices, audible voices, visions, dreams, special illumination of human mind.

The Spirit imparts words of wisdom and knowledge to God's people as the need arises.  He makes God's people understand mysteries (Daniel 2:20-21). He reveals eternal truths to us through the Bible.

The Holy Spirit  is the Spirit of Adoption

Rom 8:15

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

We are born again by the blessed Spirit when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour (John 3:5). Through the Holy Spirit we become children of God.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of holiness

Through the Holy Spirit a man can live the kind of life that pleases God, a life not stained by sin and worldliness.

The Holy Spirit sanctifies the children of God, giving them power and grace to live holy lives.

Rom 15:16

That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth

 John 14:17

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Joh 16:13

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Being of God who is the Truth (Deut. 32:4) and of Jesus who is the Truth (John 14:6), the Holy Spirit is the Truth. Everything He says is true because His holy nature will never allow him to utter a lying word.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Grace

Heb 10:29

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

Zec 12:10

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

The Holy Spirit is called  the 'Spirit of grace' because He is the one who administers the means of grace and gives to believers the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
